A Penn State spokesperson said the school continues to support the Daily Collegian and student journalists.

, Penn State’s 136-year-old student newspaper that has launched the careers of hundreds of journalists – include PennLive employees – will likely lose all university funding by the 2024-25 academic year.the university grapples with a significant deficitA Penn State spokesperson confirmed Tuesday the proposed funding cut while saying the school continues to support the Collegian and student journalists.

The university faces a $140 million structural deficit that school leaders hope to balance by fiscal year 2025. Financial concerns have brought on a hiring freeze and plans for other funding cuts across Penn State’s campuses. The Collegian’s students and alumni are rallying to find ways to support the newspaper as a changing financial situation seems imminent.

Though the outlet is editorially independent from the university, it relies on Penn State’s funding to help cover operational costs, student grants and student programming costs. The Collegian has received university financial support for over a decade, said Wayne Lowman, the Collegian’s general manager who serves as one of several non-student professional staff members at the outlet.

Now, as the funding loss looms, the Collegian has partnered with its Alumni Interest Group to kickstart a fundraising campaign to create a $10 million endowment by 2026 to ensure current operations continue. The outlet also hopes to seek foundation grants and continue earning advertising revenue to support costs.
