“There were a lot of barriers that are money-related,” said the 14-year-old, whose mom is a single parent of three and can’t afford supplies, canvases or art lessons, all of which Abby figured she’d need for a stellar portfolio. The lottery gave her hope.

Palmer, who has three kids, said her two older ones didn’t get in to a specialized program, even though they were “really skilled and really talented.” Being a low-income family, they didn’t have access to resources or private lessons, which put them at a disadvantage when it came to portfolios and auditions. But her daughter, who’s finishing Grade 8 at Bowmore Road Junior and Senior Public School, was selected in the lottery to attend Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts in Scarborough.
