The Government has not done enough to reduce “critical” safety risks from crumbling school buildings that could result in the “death or injury” of children, the public spending watchdog has warned poppyeh reports

The watchdog raised particular concerns about the prevalence of reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete – a lightweight form of concrete that was used regularly between the 1950s and mid-1990s and which is prone to failure.

The watchdog concluded that the DfE “currently lacks comprehensive information on the extent and severity of potential safety issues” in school buildings across the country, but suggested that this was partially due to the size and complexity of the school estate. “After years of firefighting issues, parents need reassurance that the department knows where, when and how any risks to their children will be remedied.”
