Grieving families buried their dead in western Uganda on Sunday while others searched desperately for missing loved ones after militants killed dozens of students in a"brutal" school attack.Officials say at least 41 people, mostly students, were massacred Friday in the worst attack of its kind in Uganda since 2010.

Pope Francis offered a prayer on Sunday for"the young student victims of the brutal attack" that has shocked Uganda and drawn condemnation from around the globe. Elias Kule, an 18-year-old survivor, said the boys locked their dormitory door when they heard gunshots and saw armed men entering the school.

"I ran out of oxygen, I covered my mouth and nose with a cloth... I got blood and smeared myself on the head and ears to claim I was dead," he said, waiting until the coast was clear to escape. The African Union, France and the United States, a close ally of Uganda, offered their condolences and condemned the bloodshed.

Dozens Killed in Uganda School AttackAt least 41 people were killed in an attack on a school in western Uganda, a local mayor said on Saturday. The police did not expand on the nature of the attack or how the victims died, but a reporter for the Daily Monitor newspaper described how some of the bodies were burned beyond recognition. Mayor Selevest Mapoze says those killed included 38 students, one guard and two members of the local community who were shot outside the school. According to police, the Lhubirira secondary school in Mpondwe situated 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) from the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, was raided by members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) -- a Ugandan group based in eastern Congo -- late on Friday. The Daily Monitor cited a senior military official as saying that the boys had been locked into one dormitory, which was set ablaze, while the girls were hacked with machetes in another dormitory. Some of the victims were shot dead. He said some students had been abducted. The ADF has long opposed the rule of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, a U.S. security ally who has been in power since 1986. A Ugandan military assault forced the ADF into eastern Congo, where many rebel groups are able to operate because the central government has limited control there.
