During a media briefing on Sunday, Motshekga said young people needed to be equipped with skills that would sustain them for their future.

Last month, News24 Business reported that the official unemployment rate increased by 0.2 of a percentage point to 32.9% in the first quarter of 2023. The ongoing public discourse on reading literacy intensified when the Progress in International Reading and Literacy Study results were released on 16 May.

But it is not true that most learners cannot read and write, as some have put it. In fact, since the release of the report, we have embarked on a series of briefing sessions with various stakeholders to share the findings and provide insight on the mechanics of participating in these international studies.
