Can you imagine if you were riding the LRT to work one morning and similarly flipped the bird to a cop, only to find the train shudder to a stop and the officer board to tell you you shouldn’t do that, threaten to haul you away, and then follow you to work to report you to your boss? So why would this youngster deserve that treatment?
But if the basic points of the complaints are substantiated, the investigation shouldn’t take nearly that long. The officer’s actions, if true, reflect poorly on him, leaving a blemish that his colleagues and the force hardly need. “To be abundantly clear, it is not a crime to give someone the finger,” Justice Dennis Galiatsatos wrote in his ruling. “Flipping the proverbial bird is a God-given, Charter-enshrined right that belongs to every red-blooded Canadian. It may not be civil, it may not be polite, it may not be gentlemanly. Nevertheless, it does not trigger criminal liability.
