The settlement agreement looks like performative reconciliation. It is the kind of promise my community is now accustomed to: an empty one.

Indigenous voices have repeatedly reminded the Trudeau government that reconciliation requires more than just words, as promises too often yield empty results. While the government assures us of their careful listening and acknowledges that reconciliation cannot be achieved through half-measures, the settlement agreement displays all the characteristics of performative reconciliation. It is the kind of promise my community has grown only too accustomed to: the empty one.

In any context, this arbitrary timeline would have been extremely challenging, but it became grossly unjust when, only months after the settlement claim process began in January 2020, the pandemic hit. Today, already, that claims deadline is closed with zero consideration afforded to the debilitating impact of COVID-19 on Indigenous communities. This degree of negligence is thoughtless and cruel.

These, however, were the obstacles facing those who were aware of this settlement. The disturbing reality is that woefully inadequate outreach efforts meant most people in my community were oblivious of the settlement altogether.
