The video obtained by The Free Press is taken from an Instagram account, but appears to be a recording of footage originally posted to another social media channel, Snapchat.
The Instagram post was made by a person identifying themselves as a student at SFBSS – Sir Frederick Banting secondary school – and in a message exchange with The Free Press he denied being present for the Pride flag teardown. “I don’t support this. It’s just a video that I found funny and re-posted it,” wrote the student, whose name The Free Press isn’t publishing given the lack of clarity on the incident. “I haven’t done anything other than re-posting a video.
The video surfaces as issues over LGBTQ rights flare at some schools during June, which is Pride month, and in some area municipalities where local politicians have prevented the flying of Pride flags on municipal properties. The Free Press is seeking comment from the school and the Thames Valley District school board and will add to this story as it develops. This is unacceptable and extremely upsetting, especially for members of our LGBTQ2S+ community.
