The University of Fort Hare says the violence was not related to student affairs because five of the 12 people arrested for allegedly torching the indoor sport centre were not students. | MaliDayimani

The University of Fort Hare has described the outbreak of violence, in which a section of a building was set alight, as"sponsored anarchy".

The disorder was not related to student affairs because five of the 12 people arrested for allegedly torching the indoor sport centre were not students, the institution said. The violence on campus comes as a court case is under way in the Dimbaza Magistrate's Court where five men face charges relating to the murders of Mboneli Vesele and Petrus Roets. Vesele was vice-chancellor Sakhela Buhlungu’s bodyguard, while Roets worked as a fleet manager at the institution.Get 14 days free to read all our investigative and in-depth journalism.
