President Joe Biden attended the high school graduation of his granddaughter, Natalie, in Delaware on Sunday, just hours after reaching an agreement with House Republicans on the debt ceiling.

The president and first lady Jill Biden traveled from Camp David to the St. Andrew's School in Middletown, Delaware, Sunday morning following Saturday's late-night agreement with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy .The Bidens will travel back to Washington, D.C., Sunday afternoon. The president did not directly address the deal, a reported two-year hike to the debt limit, during his short trip.

The president did release a statement, however, on the deal Sunday morning via the White House Office of Political Strategy and Outreach. Biden called the agreement “an important step forward that reduces spending while protecting critical programs for working people and growing the economy for everyone."“The agreement protects my and Congressional Democrats’ key priorities and legislative accomplishments,” he added, noting that the “agreement represents a compromise, which means not everyone gets what they want.”

“The agreement is good news for the American people, because it prevents what could have been a catastrophic default and would have led to an economic recession, retirement accounts devastated, and millions of jobs lost,” Biden continued. “Over the next day, our negotiating teams will finalize legislative text and the agreement will go to the United States House and Senate. I strongly urge both chambers to pass the agreement right away.
