A university president explains that work is a critical part of life, existing in a concentric circle rather than an opposing sphere.

The president of Touro College says his years of experience have shown that the buzz phrase work-life balance is off the mark. Placing work on one side as the pain point, and “life” on the other as the source of pleasure, unfairly pits the two against each other.It’s that time of the year. Graduates are preparing to leave the comfort of college and enter the real world.

Work can be an incubator for all of the other life skills that are needed.

Don’t attempt to allocate an even percentage to each sphere so that if one gets more of your time, the other sphere loses out. If you can combine a few at a time, you will address the basic human needs that we all have, and you will be on your way to leading a satisfying, meaningful life. In our modern, post-COVID era, where all or partial remote work is often the norm, we each have opportunities to integrate work into life, and life into work, in ways that were never possible before. As a cycling enthusiast, I began indulging this passion before beginning my workday while the world was shut down, and I now continue my morning bike rides during remote days.
