A large audience turned out for the Mat-Su school board meeting Wednesday May 23, 2023 at Matanuska-Susitna Borough School District administrative offices in Palmer. Supporters of teachers, who have authorized a strike, wore red shirts. for a new library committee that will review dozens of challenged books in Alaska’s second-largest school district.
The committee will serve for one year and have 13 members, with remaining seats held by two district staffers; two school board members; and two librarians. selection process, said there are “a lot of highly educated people in this community” that will be able to collaborate on a review process intended to protect district employees, including librarians, from criminal charges.
“I think those people may not be as objective as we’d like,” he said. “I think that we risk limiting free speech in our district and the freedom of ideas, and I think it’s government overreach.”
