'Safety was compromised from the start'

Toxic dust from a demolition site next to Glasgow's Queen Elizabeth University Hospital caused contamination within its water supply, leading to deadly infections in patients.

“If I had been asked for my ­opinion at the time, I would have said there should have been a delay [in opening].” The Scottish ­Hospitals Inquiry was set up to look at issues around the building of both the QEUH ­campus and Edinburgh’s Royal Hospital for ­Children and Young People. It states there was “the presence of cockroaches, fungal odour, room not ventilated, water ingress and dried algae present on the floor”.
