China hawks criticised Mr Sunak’s decision to backtrack on plans to outlaw the organisations, claiming it proved that the Government’s stance on China is “fundamentally wrong”.
It comes as the Office for Students announced on Thursday that it has written to select universities urging them to draw up contingency plans in case relations with China sour significantly due to a major global event. Vivienne Stern, the chief executive of Universities UK , which represents more than 150 universities across Britain, has previously toldto cope with a potential shock to their Chinese student intake, such as if China were to invade Taiwan.
