Rains exceeding 1 inch an hour were reported Tuesday on New Zealand’s North Island. Auckland, about 100 miles from Whangārei, received 3 inches, more than half its historic average for the month of May. It declared a state of emergency and remained under an orange alert until midnight.
According to the Whangārei District Council’s website, the Abbey Caves are prone to flash flooding, and visitors are warned to check the weather forecast before setting out. There are three limestone caves on the 0.75-mile trail loop in the small district park. Whangārei Boys High School issued a statement saying the students on the trip were Year 11, generally 15- and 16-year-olds. The school curriculum emphasizes outdoor education; the 11th-year students take trips to go surfing, kayaking, snorkeling, rock climbing, rappelling, caving and orienteering, its online calendar says.
The school said it would be in session as normal on Wednesday to “maintain a sense of routine” for students and staff.™ & © 2023 Cable News Network, Inc., a Warner Bros. Discovery Company. All rights reserved.
