Nick Druzbanski and cast in"School of Rock" at the Paramount Theatre in Aurora.
Paramount invariably does good work, but once in a while it kicks out a production easily comparable to anything on Broadway, minus the ticket prices, and wholly meriting a trip to downtown Aurora, even from far away. This is one of those shows. Pack up the fam and rock on down there. You won’t be disappointed. As movies turned into musicals go, this 2015 effort is one of the most successful.
Here’s the gently anarchic gist of the show: Dewey is a substitute teacher in a stuck-up private school who has weaseled his way into the classroom by stealing the identity of his roomie Ned Schneebly , much to the chagrin of Ned’s hard-driving partner Patti . Once there, he fires up a classroom filled with bored kids by turning them into singers, musicians and even, in the case of preciously brilliant Summer , a manager, all in the hope of winning the local Battle of the Bands.
The show’s calling card is that the kids really sing and play their instruments. And here’s the thing: that works much better in the live theater than on the movie screen because you know you can believe what you see and hear when Hollywood shenanigans are not possible.
