Ms. Mayhugh is no stranger to the city of Cleveland. She grew up in the city, frequently visiting her grandma and uncle, who lived in the West Boulevard neighborhood, just a few blocks from Almira, where her mother attended school.

NEW!CLEVELAND, Ohio – Melanie is having trouble concentrating on the reading lesson. Her head hurts, and her stomach is in knots. So, she asks her fifth-grade teacher, Ms. Mary Hejnal, if she can go downstairs to see Almira Elementary School’s onsite nurse.

In fact, Ms. Mayhugh has a bachelor’s degree in cellular and molecular biology and a minor in neuroscience. “Watching them get better and knowing I was part of that made me so happy, and I realized I needed to go to nursing school and become a nurse,” Ms. Mayhugh said. “Those women put me on this path and changed my life.”

“When I was hired, I was originally supposed to be at a different school. That one became unavailable, and I asked if I could come to Almira,” Ms. Mayhugh said. “It’s always been really special to me.” She has a gift in advocating for those who need it most, says Mr. James Greene, Almira’s principal. He lauded her commitment to making sure the school had the resources and that the staff had the education it needed to welcome a new student who suffers from seizures.
