The Education Department has released long-awaited, detailed updates on a key Biden administration initiative that may jump-start student loan forgiveness for millions of borrowers.

In response to these problems, the Biden administration established the IDR Account Adjustment last year. Under the one-time program, the Education Department will provide borrowers with credit toward a borrower’s 20- or 25-year IDR student loan forgiveness term for periods that otherwise would not count, even for borrowers not currently enrolled in an IDR program.

The new guidance indicates that the timing of student loan forgiveness relief will depend on when, exactly, the borrower reaches the threshold: “Borrowers who exit default prior to the end of the Fresh Start period will receive the full benefit of the account adjustment and receive credit for periods in default from March 2020 through the month they exit default,” according to the Education Department.”Borrowers can be eligible for student loan forgiveness after receiving 20 or 25 years’ of IDR credit. But until now, the Education Department was not clear about who would qualify for 20-year student loan forgiveness vs.

However, periods before July 1, 1994, can be used to determine whether a borrower had extended forbearance periods that could count. The Education Department can credit forbearance periods toward a borrower’s IDR term if the borrower had 36 cumulative months of forbearance; periods before July 1, 1994 can be used to determine if a borrower has enough forbearance, although the forbearance periods themselves can only be credited if they occurred after July 1, 1994.

“According to the new guidance, borrowers who have only undergraduate student loans would qualify for the 20-year student loan forgiveness term. In addition, borrowers who are currently enrolled in the Pay As You Earn (PAYE) plan would also qualify for the 20-year term.”

AKA... the biggest bribe ever paid by a political party in order to secure a long-term vote base.

Not bad.

People who could not afford college are paying for people who went to college and don’t want to work to pay their loan. Joe biden’s America - had enough yet?

If they borrowed the money they need to pay the money back. They knew the terms when they borrowed the money. NO EXCUSES don’t be deadbeats!

This is yet another reason the federal government should not be involved in student loans. Make the colleges justify their degrees earnings potential so a private institution is willing to give loans to cover the education. We shouldn’t be using tax dollars to subsidize loans
