A Sky News Australia special report on the coronation has shone new light on King Charles’ early years, including his time studying in Australia.

In 1966, Charles famously moved to Victoria at age 17 to live at Geelong Grammar School’s Timbertop campus.

Fellow royal commentator Russell Myers agreed Charles’ time studying in Australia “was one of the happiest times in his adolescence”. According to Royal Historian Robert Lacey, the more laid-back lifestyle in Australia was transformative for the Prince of Wales. In 1975, then-Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser allegedly suggested that Charles should become Australia’s next governor general.

Nevertheless, Charles continued to tour Australia more than a dozen times since his days as a student in Victoria. The 1983 royal tour of Australia was a different type of turning point in Charles' life. Picture: David Levenson/Getty Images.
