Joseph Banales, the University of Incarnate Word nursing and Army ROTC student who was found dead in a single-vehicle crash Saturday, died from a gunshot wound to the head, the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office determined.

in the driver’s seat of his vehicle just before midnight Saturday in the 15400 block of Interstate 35 North. Medical personnel pronounced Banales dead at the scene and noted that he had injuries to the back of his head.

Witnesses told Selma police that Banales' vehicle had been swerving before the crash, almost hitting another vehicle. Banales' vehicle came to a stop after hitting the inside median, according to Selma police. The college student, who was in the Army ROTC program at UIW, was on his way home from dropping off his girlfriend after they attended a military ball that night, media reports said.
