For the most part, Atkins’ accomplishments during his long tenure have been modest. The environmental mess that became known as— an illegal pile of discarded roofing materials in the Floral Farms neighborhood — was a huge embarrassment for the district. However, at this juncture, Atkins’ seniority in the council and policymaking knowledge give him an advantage to keep propelling economic development in southern Dallas.
Brenham argued that there is a need for more transparency and communication, but Atkins has gotten better at informing his community, including a monthly newsletter and a neighborhood services center open to the public. Atkins has advocated for more neighborhood police officers but acknowledged that Dallas police are short-staffed.
