Brighton council is going to be a big help in the creation of a modern playground at Smithfield Public School.
The playground equipment at the school has reached the end of its life and a parents’ group has been fundraising for new equipment. School boards do not pay to buy new equipment but will pay to maintain it. Smithfield Public School volunteers have asked council for $85,000 and council has agreed but with a stipulation, as mayor of Brighton Brian Ostrander explains.
“We would insist on a memorandum of understanding with the school board that that playground space would be made available to the public when the school wasn’t in session.”Council is contributing to two new play structures to be installed this year. Other work will be completed at the school using the $43,000 raised by volunteers.
