Michael Ajilore, a first-year computer science student at UPEI, feels he has paid a lot of money to have his time wasted. Ajilore left his home country because of a strike at his university, and in his first year here, he’s dealing with another strike. - George Melitides/SaltWireCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Michael Ajilore left his home in Nigeria to study in Canada because of labour strikes at the University of Lagos which lasted months during what should have been his graduating year there.
“I paid so much to come here to get my time wasted. That’s really what’s bothering me,” he said. “I’m lagging behind and I’m just sitting around trying to do other things. Trying to get a work schedule or something to keep myself busy. It really reduces the morale.” The email also noted UPEI was committed to crediting students with net savings from not paying faculty salaries while they are on strike.
Hinako Goto, a fourth-year psychology at UPEI, worries the strike may affect her ability to graduate and, by extension, her ability to stay in Canada. Though she said UPEI assured students graduation would not be affected, is was unclear on how. - George Melitides/SaltWire
