This week, Stellenbosch University launched its Biomedical Research Institute in efforts to address Africa's rising disease burden, and to be a training centre for the continent.

CAPE TOWN - Medical scientists said the COVID-19 pandemic underlined ground-breaking research conducted in South Africa.

"COVID-19 underlined our excellence, but it also showed us clearly that we need as Africans to really provide our own solutions, to join hands, and to make sure that we are also at a level that we can advance health in Africa with the latest technology, with the latest that biomedical research can offer."

Prof Tulio de Oliveira, Director - Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation says what attracted him to the campus, is the prospect to “…create a space where we can do the highest levels of science in the world…” pic.twitter.com/GB7D02nxPC
