The Education Department has already said, in aSchools that want to limit trans athletes’ participation in sports would have to consider the sport, the level of competition, and the grade or education level involved.
It noted that some teams require advanced skills and others allow anyone to participate, such as intramural or junior varsity squads, and said rules must “reflect these differences in competition.”The new rules, which will be subject to public comment, are the administration’s interpretation of the federal Title IX law, and would apply to all public K-12 schools, as well as colleges and universities that receive federal funding.
