Losing job security and a paycheck is a challenge for anyone. But for those on a work visa, it could mean having to hastily pack up and leave the country.

If you’re a young professional on a visa who has recently been laid off, what can you do?

If you’re active on LinkedIn, you’ve likely seen many people posting their layoff stories and announcing their openness to new work. While this is a good start, you’ll up your chances of drawing attention if you treat the post a little more like a short cover letter. When posting, focus on the following tips:Focus on the hard and soft skills you gained in your last job, or skills that potential new employers may value.

Direct messaging allows you to personalize your approach and cater the skills you highlight to what the receiver may be looking for. This is typically a better approach than the general “To whom it may concern.” In my experience, asking people for help directly, whether on LinkedIn or by email, is most effective.
