Austin ISD considers whether to appeal state oversight of its special education departmentThe Texas Education Agency announced last week it wants to install a management team to oversee AISD’s special education department, citing systemic issues. The district's school board has until mid-April to request a review of the agency’s proposed conservatorship. The only reason to appeal is to hide their shortcomings. Administrators are failing their districts at all time high levels. Austin ISD needs major help and restructuring. Being married to a teacher in AISD, I can tell you that the special education department needs major oversight. However, this is systemically rooted in the way Texas historically, handled special education, which is why the state got slammed by the Obama Department of Education. AISD does need some help but not taking away over $800 million from them every year would be a good start to add resources. Texas as a whole also fails special education students.
