Simmons.after she got an edict to refrain from making high-level appointments, which the system explained was standard for outgoing presidents – and she recently elaborated on her feelings in an exclusive interview with the Houston Chronicle last month.Simmons said the Texas A&M System undervalued her experience.
Simmons has visited Wheatley several times in recent years, and she heavily credits her teachers for educating her when they had virtually no support from the state and district. The Fifth Ward campus is now in the spotlight because its multiple failing accountability grades prompted the state takeover of Houston Independent School District.
“Hostile takeovers in the business world can sometimes succeed, because it's all about the bottom line. Our schools are not about the bottom. They're about the human factor,” she said in her Chronicle interview. “A distant operation that tries to manipulate locally, usually doesn't have much success … so what that takeover is all about is anybody's guess.
"The thing that is gratifying to me about all of that is I have been a problem everywhere," she said."All I can think is that decades later, people see the value in somebody standing for something."Simmons was retired for years when Texas A&M Chancellor John Sharp asked her to serve as interim president of Prairie View A&M University.
