An upstate school for autistic students is not only helping them reach their full potential, but also creating a next generation of teachers to spread their knowledge of treating students on the spectrum across the globe.

FOX 5 NY's Sharon Crowley meets Jackie and Andy Mandel, whose son Jonathan is on the Autism spectrum. Jonathan is now 20 years old and resides at the Anderson Center for Autism in Duchess County, New York. We visit the Anderson Center to learn how it has provided Jonathan with opportunities to learn important life skills, independence and communication through assistive technology. For some families, keeping their autistic child at home is just not possible.

"Autism is not a choice," Jackie continued. "It wasn't our choice for our son to have autism, but acceptance is. And acceptance is so important in our society." "Having a child with special needs is difficult on the family unit, I think. It's difficult on the marriage. It's difficult for everyone who lives in the house," Jackie explained. "We wanted to alleviate the stress for all of us but most importantly for Jonathan. It worked out really well."

Patrick Paul, the executive director and CEO, says their key to success is the highly trained staff who have learned to adapt to challenges.
