The TEA said in a statement that it had been investigating the district’s special education department and found that it had “systemic issues.” "We are focused on our students, and we welcome collaboration with TEA to help us catch up on long-overdue evaluations. We are united in our focus to ensure that all students receive what they need, when they need it," theThe board plans to hold a public meeting to address the conservatorship and allow for public comment on Monday evening.
A conservator acts as a manager of the school district, ensuring that the school board and superintendent are taking the necessary steps to solve any issues flagged by the state’s education agency. According to the TEA’s website, a conservator can “direct the action of a campus principal, superintendent, or board of trustees.
Texas schools have long been under the microscope when it comes to special education. A 2018 federal investigationthat the state had been effectively denying students with disabilities the tools and services they need in order to learn, in violation of federal law. In 2020, the federal government found that the TEA had not done enough to serve all special education students.
Another Democrat failure.
Has that side of education been under funded for a while ?
Pretextual at best
I'm glad your reporter talked to Rep. Gina Hinojosa, but she should probably be identified in the piece as a former Austin ISD trustee.
They just needed an Oversight by Professional Administrators in Education, not in political politics.
Which ISD is going to be next? Place bets anyone? Large urban area for sure. San Antonio? Dallas?
Austin ISD does amazing work. I visit many districts in Texas, their has always been the most innovative and forward thinking. They’ve provided students with focused K-12 social emotional learning, along with the academic curriculum. Hands off our schools! txlege
Can’t Austin file a lawsuit to stop this? It seems egregious.
Texas continues to turn into a Police State — if the fascists can’t sell the citizens on these awful vouchers they’ll destroy our education system another way
Sounds like a bogus reason to me
I wonder who gets to decide this? Hey, TEA and GovAbbott GregAbbott_TX Did y’all hear about the EIGHT civil rights violations in the Southlake Carroll ISD?
Abbott taking over in an effort to destroy public Ed
I have a fix....School Choice.
GOP believes in local control. Unless of course you don’t vote for them.
Because I’m sure Austin isd recieves adequate state funding to support special education programs
State set limit of 8% on students who could get special education services but Abbott tried to blame the schools years ago. Now Abbott is after Austin schools to promote his vouchers act. Course private schools don't serve special ed students anyway.
Greg Abbott trying to be a dictator
teainfo AustinISD HoustonISD The Republican war against public schools continues. Why do they suddenly now care about special ed when it has been systematically underfunded for 15 years? Remember the secret cap at 8.25% in 2006-07? This is a move to privatize Sp.Ed. for their cronies. Disgusting.
teainfo AustinISD HoustonISD Somebody needs to stop these people. San Antonio, Dallas, Fort Worth our school districts are next.
teainfo AustinISD HoustonISD We are rapidly becoming a police state controlled by Abbott He’s taking over school districts He’s got national guard at the border, national guard & DPS patrolling Austin & he’s pulled a move out of Mussolinis playbook and flooded Rev state with guns
teainfo AustinISD HoustonISD Oh look it's the party of small government...
teainfo AustinISD HoustonISD Don’t forget to point out the state underfunded special education in direct violation of federal SPED laws, and was fined for it…
teainfo AustinISD HoustonISD Do right … or suffer … aren’t they both Dem run cities?
teainfo AustinISD HoustonISD MikeMorath and teainfo is a waste of taxpayer dollars.
Between this & KirkPWatson acknowledging the need for DPS🚔, is austintexasgov a ward of the state? Failing basic services of power, water, crime, now education. Britney, Bam Margera, & some nursing home patients have more independence than Austinites. Can we ask ChatGPT4? SOS
teainfo AustinISD HoustonISD Greg wants to make blue cities really 🔵. Pardon me but no one believes the TEA is that concerned about special ed students!
James_Barragan teainfo AustinISD HoustonISD I think the article is incomplete without updating readers on the progress made by TEA itself with regards to special education seeing as they are been under fenders oversight for the exact same reason since 2018.
James_Barragan teainfo AustinISD HoustonISD
teainfo AustinISD HoustonISD Lol the party of local control strikes again. RepublicansAreTheProblem
teainfo AustinISD HoustonISD They are steamrolling over districts they deem too liberal. They are deleting our votes and setting up their pals to get rich with vouchers & charter schools. It is anti-democratic and frankly, segregation in drag. StateSponsoredSegregation
teainfo AustinISD HoustonISD Let me guess… Dallas ISD will be next. 🔵
