Tennessee Republicans doubled down on proposals to ratchet up school security — but not pass stricter gun laws — in the wake of The Covenant School shooting.

Sens. Marsha Blackburn and Bill Hagerty unveiled legislation Thursday to create a $900 million federal grant program for school safety measures.

Public and private schools could use grant funds to train and hire military veterans and former law enforcement officers to serve as security guards. Grants could also be used to harden schools and improve physical security with surveillance systems, silent alarms, automatic locking mechanisms and metal detectors.

"By providing schools with these critical funds, we can help protect our precious children," Blackburn saidLt. Gov. Randy McNally sent a letter to Gov. Bill Lee offering ideas for how to make schools safer. McNally mentioned securing windows, installing magnetic locks, modernizing security cameras and adding more armed guards at schools."If we can ensure that all schools, public and private, have armed guards, we may be able to cut down on these events significantly," McNally wrote to Lee. McNally told reporters he expected details on additional investment in school security to be released soon.

It's the guns.

What about recess? Dismissal? A bullet proof tube to each kid’s home perhaps? Armed escort for all? Or you could just ban assault weapons.

Moral! Rot!

Military state

I mean the fact that MarshaBlackburn is in Congress shows that the people of TN are just pathetic.

whiteburn ruins everything it touches

You jewish tyrants sure want us disarmed!

What’s wrong with protecting our schools with armed police? Nashville PD got it right. I bet the school district offices have armed security.

The Covenant School is a private Christian school. Why should public tax dollars pay for security at for profit private schools?

Here’s a stricter gun law….anyone suffering with a mental disorder such as gender dysphoria cannot pass the FBI NICS firearm purchase background check and therefore is unable to legally purchase firearms.

Still haven’t seen an estimate for arming and training teachers.

rhonda_harbison They love that NRA money. 🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑

Absolute cowardice

The person blew the door apart with the assault weapon. How stupid are the people in Tennessee?

Both gun control & increased school police 👮‍♀️ are just pretending you're doing something

Cowards

good

Building stronger cars does not prevent car crashes but rules on ownership and driving do. Making stronger doors on school buildings will not stop the gun violence.

What is wrong with Marsha Blackburn? It’s the campaign money and the Republican primary isn’t it? Shame on you you foolish woman. It’s supposed to be about the children.

Make schools look like a penitentiary with TSA level screening because we’re to afraid to pass a gun law.

Why only one way to move forward? Where’s the discussion?

axios promotes a very biased liberal agenda. Particularly with their regional rags. Always watch their story and word choice.

How much does it cost to arm and train a person in firearms? Multiply that by how many teachers are there? These teachers aren’t getting paid a living wage but sure let’s buy them some guns.

she the type whose husband woulda cheated on her with the property back in antebellum times

Axios is doing everything possible not to report on the motives of the Christian school shooter. They are not mentioning the shooter's manifesto

“Wasyul Hayul! We jus’ gonna make sure that the schools got more lethal firearms than the crazies.” (spoken by political types who have never been in a fire fight.)

Nuns with Guns!

Deal with it 🤡🤡🤡🤡

'but not pass stricter gun laws' why would they?
