Man Fatally Shot by DeSoto Police During Burglary Call Was a Dallas ISD Special Ed Teacher

morning was a special education teacher in the Dallas ISD, the district confirms.

Michael Nunez, 47, was fatally shot by DeSoto Police who said he was armed and advanced toward an officer responding to a burglary at a home on the 300 block of Polk Street at about 11:30 a.m. Grand Prairie Police on Wednesday said Nunez was armed with"a homemade edged weapon, similar to a knife," and"lunged at officers in an attempt to stab the officer prior to arrest."

The school district confirmed to NBC 5 Wednesday that Nunez was a special education inclusion teacher atand that he worked with several students to ensure they received support for their specific needs. The students he worked with have now been assigned to other special education inclusion teachers at the high school.

The district said they would have counselors and mental health clinicians at the high school and that they would remain available for students and team members throughout the week.It's not clear if there is body camera video of the police response and shooting.
