Get Fit Jog participants try out the street of North Palm Court during their 1.2 mile journey.A fun addition was created for this past Saturday's 43rd Get Fit Jog when a stopwatch was put to the hundreds of youngsters, who had earned their chance to travel the new distance of 1.2 miles for all the grades.
Roberts Middle School student Ashton Wilson was a close runner-up, reaching the finish line on the Veterans Memorial Stadium turf in 7:09.58. Eli Cardenas of Sullivan nabbed the bronze medal in 7:44.51 and the last youngster with a sub eight-minute time was Robert Pheister of Melillo Middle School, reaching the finish in 7:55.83.
Unfortunately, it was an abbreviated Get Fit Jog career for the sixth graders. Their third and fourth-grade scampers were wiped out by the pandemic.Another sub eight-minute time can be found among the fifth graders. Kendrick Middle School's Christopher Russell was clocked at 7:52.37. Had he been a sixth grader, his time would have gotten him the fourth-fastest honors. Shaw's Jose Perez was next at 8:04.44, followed by Lomax's Bryan Martinez, who came home in 8:17.51.
Like the sixth graders, this was just the second Get Fit Jog for the fifth graders when it should have been their third. The pandemic eliminated their third-grade run on city streets. There was almost a sub eight-minute time from the fourth-grade boys. Folks will have to keep an eye on Julian Roman, who won the division in 8:02.01, topping Alberto Navarrete and his 8:14.41. Mae Smythe's Jordan Wileman was next at 8:27.54, nipping Golden Acres' Aldo Espinoza and his 8:27.68.
