Bob Romano was standing in a parking lot at Thomas Jefferson High School when the gunshot rang out.
By the time the pair saw the wounded student for themselves, a parent had already taken their belt off to use as a tourniquet, according to Romano, hoping to stop the bleeding. The student, who was struck in the arm, was going in and out of consciousness, so while Romano called 911, Velazquez said he did his best to keep the student engaged and alert.
The injured student, whose identity has not been released publicly, is expected to make a full recovery, and district officials have repeatedly credited three staff members for their prompt response, including Romano, Velazquez and Brandi Elder, the school’s assistant athletic coordinator.
We shouldn't accept or normalize the explosion of violent crimes being committed by black men/teens. Romano might want to check the stats. 60% of the violent crime arrestees in Dallas this year have been black men.
