JOHANNESBURG - Wits University management has reached an agreement with its SRC on a way forward.
The campus descended into chaos last week when students protested against financial exclusions and a lack of student accommodation.On Monday the university announced that following engagements with students, they have agreed to a proposal of a mediation process between parties. They have committed to engage a professional mediator for this process, and the university will work with the SRC to arrange appropriate terms.

Should have done that a long time ago. Dialogue yields better results for all. Perennial Students are also a drain on the University System. Apprenticeship & Practical Skills training are also a very good start in life. University was never for every one immediately school.

Here's how much students pay for accomodationAmong key demands by protesting students at Wits University is the scrapping of a R45,000 National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) annual cap for accommodation. And mostly government is paying that money through NSFAS for those students who are sponsored AND mostly, those ccomodations are owned by white elite who benefitted from pre 94 gvt. CT real estate exorbitant inflation of prices is real. The competition commission should investigate residence prices. And the government should introduce legislation to put a price ceiling on residence fees. And? Please show me where in the law does it state that universities are obligated to provide accommodation to students? Maybe build a top class university in Limpopo/Mpumalanga/North West and then students wouldn’t have to rock up in Cape Town demanding free accommodation.
