The Student Press Law Center found 35% of districts in N.J. that are in violation of the anti-censorship law.

to end censorship of student journalists in 2021. The Student Press Law Center was proud to stand beside those student journalists, as we are today. But today, more than one-third of New Jersey’s school districts appear to be violating the law.

This means that student journalists and their advisers are operating under outdated policies that often require prior review and enable censorship of well-reported stories that may be controversial or embarrassing to the school. This is despite the fact that such censorship is against the law. In October, seeing little progress, the Student Press Law Center reached out to Acting Commissioner of Education Angelica Allen-McMillan, asking her to issue guidance to all school districts to facilitate smoother implementation of the law. We received no response.
