Elected officials, community members protest possible HISD takeover

or a possible federal lawsuit may still intervene with the state agency's purported plan.

"The power is in the hands of the local stakeholders," Turner said."If the teachers, the cafeteria workers and the custodial workers and the bus drivers and the parents say 'no,' you tell me how the state is going to run the largest school district in the state of Texas." In the years since the state first initiated the takeover attempt, Wheatley's accountability rating has climbed from an F to a C."You can't justify doing something today based upon yesterday," he said, urging the Wheatley community to stay hopeful."Peaceful protest can keep the doors of this school open for this community.

Rachel Davis, a former cheerleader who graduated from Wheatley in 1971, said generations of her family have attended the school. She learned the school song as soon as she could talk and she still attends basketball and football games with family. Sporting a purple shirt and pom-pom at the rally, Davis said she opposes any attempt to shut down her alma mater, which has a rich history.
