The parents of a South Carolina high school student are suing a teacher, principal, and other education officials saying she was accosted when she didn't stop and recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

Marissa Barnwell said she was walking quietly to class and decided not to stop for the pledge or a moment of silence that followed. A teacher yelled at her, confronted her and pushed her against a wall.

Barnwell was then sent to the principal’s office, which she said was humiliating because she feared she was in trouble. The principal promised to look at the video of the encounter and sent her back to class, but Barnwell said he never let her know that the teacher was wrong and she was right. “I was completely and utterly disrespected,” Barnwell, 15, said at a news conference Thursday, according to

I used to be a big believer in the pledge until I thought about it and realized it was a pretty unChristian thing to do.

Why was she in the hallway when classes were obviously already started? The whole story is not being told and I would bet that it is about being late for class more than anything. The victim class chooses to make the story something other than what it is.

ashtonpittman Good. She did have her rights violated. Not to mention, we already had this issue settled by SCOTUS in West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943)

Not excusing the incident, but it wasn’t a “teacher” who did this. It was a “teaching assistant” who was probably never educated in student rights - they are paid hourly in most districts in SC and do not receive a very comprehensive training. Only required to have a h.s. diploma

Please let that student know our family supports her 100%. I don't recite those words--EVER--even though I work in schools; neither did my children when they attended school. It's gross to force kids to pledge 'allegiance'--reminds me of Hitler Youth pledge. Gross.

One of the earliest educations I gave to my kid was explaining the Pledge of Allegiance and if she didn’t agree to the “Pledge” to not say it. I was proud when I saw her respectfully stand and then not recite it during her graduation. Florence County.

Show the footage. I doubt the teacher did what the girl said, although I suppose it’s possible. I learned a long time ago to take the stories told by children with a grain of salt.

I'm a conservative and love America but I believe in free speech. I would never punish any person to say the pledge of allegiance just as I wouldn't punish anyone for not using certain pronouns or for sharing information about vaccine deaths.

The student was entirely within her rights here.

The most patriotic group in America are black women. Time and time again when it comes to voting they put everything on the line to save America and democracy.

West Virginia V Barnett ruling stated a school nor government can force a person to do the pledge.

Since 1943 it's been against federal law to force students to recite the Pledge. This shouldn't even make it to trial.
