As part of a push to boost interest in the skilled trades, high school students will soon need to earn a tech credit in order to graduate, Education Minister Stephen Lecce has announced.“By requiring students to take at least one technological education credit in high school, we are opening up doors and creating new pathways to good jobs in STEM and the skilled trades,” Lecce said in a written statement.
, given the labour shortage in the province with 100,000 unfilled jobs — a number that is expected to skyrocket given the demands as well as the demographics of the sector. Labour Minister Monte McNaughton has previously said the province is looking for ways to encourage more females to enter the skilled trades, given they comprise less than 30 per cent of that workforce.
“This mandatory graduation requirement means a brighter future — not just for women and girls — but for our entire province.”
sflecce and fordnation will have to stop their unconstitutional attacks on educators' wages if they want to attract quality people. Teachers have been vilified by this government for too long. onpoli onted
Is physical ed and music a tech credit?
If the intent is to muster interest, then the government should bring back shop and home ec in elementary school. Girls and boys can benefit from both courses.
How will this be staffed, how many schools have the space for this, how will this impact elective subjects squeezed by another compulsory credit, is there money for EA's to assist kids with disabilities, will funding increase for these costly courses?
Good luck getting teachers.
Perhaps courses on communication and critical thinking to question their leaders and the media
How about a personalized financial plan credit being taught as well, not instead but to everyone? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Robots 🤖 are going to take over the trades. It’s happening all ready.
Great look, Ontario: 'I took too many advanced courses to graduate from high school'
It comes from parents pushing only a few careers on their child (doctor, engineer, lawyer) and putting down trades.
Really helping those developer donors… Hide it as “education.” Every kid in high school who had a slight interest in the trades you knew who they were (hunting jacket people) and they took shop classes.
Like changing a flat tire or basic household repairs
Funny how ideas get recycled. This existed in the 90s., so please OntarioPCParty don't act like youve come up with a genius idea
You don’t wait till you are out of qualified tradesmen before you do something productive. It’s way too late now. It takes years to learn and develop the skills required to work in trades.
They can't read!! What technology? They can't spell!
Torstar needs to do some investigation into facts before reporting Leece’s propaganda as innovative. Cons notoriously take credit for other’s’ accomplishments and refuse to take any responsibility for their discriminatory policies.
It will actually give them life skills something our education system doesn’t do? They say they do all and say they prepare these children to be workers! How about teaching them how to save money and teach them to invest money instead of teaching them to be workers !
They already have a credit in technology (including trades). So ridiculous. Would be better to put funding into community colleges so more kids can afford to go into education for trades.
Isn’t that already a requirement of the OSSD in grades 9 / 10? More announcements of things that already exist in Ontario schools. onted
