Houston women beat Wichita State, advance to AAC championship game

Tiara Young scored a career-high 26 points as the University of Houston beat Wichita State 72-64 on Wednesday in Fort Worth to move within one victory of a spot in the NCAA women’s basketball tournament.

UH used a late 17-2 run to advance to the American Athletic Conference championship game for the first time. The Cougars will face the winner of Wednesday’s other semifinal, between No. 2 seed Memphis and No. 3 seed East Carolina, at 8 p.m. Thursday at Dickies Arena.“It’s a long time coming,” coach Ron Hughey said. “I’m just so excited and delighted in the faith the university continued to have in everything we do with women’s basketball.

Curtessia Dean hit a 3-pointer and followed with a three-point point play to put Wichita State ahead, 53-51, with 7:59 left in the game. UH scored 17 of the game’s next 19 points, 10 coming from Young, to pull away. Young was 10-of-26 shooting off the bench. Laila Blair added 19 points and Britney Onyeje had 13 points.
