The Highlands Brigade dance team members shook silver and black pom poms to the beat. The brigade’s colonel, Nalaniya Wilson, led the parade that she and the union organized.On ExpressNews.com:The parade marked the last day of the school’s Black history events. Nalaniya said their mission to build bridges with other cultures continues throughout the year.
Teacher Lashunda Wright sponsored the students’ proposal. Nalaniya said they drafted a constitution and bylines approved by Penny Pruitt, the school’s principal. “We’re trying, little by little, to teach kids about Black culture, schools and education — just little stuff they don’t see every day,” Nalaniya said. “I try not only to indulge in my culture, but also learn about others. That’s all we’re trying to do, is help people embrace their culture and learn about ours.
