Mikell Simpson has become a big community advocate and organizer in Harrisburg since his football playing days.

Mikell Simpson founder of the non profit Capital Rebirth, has been actively involved in voter registration drives and outreach events. He still sees the lingering historical apathy among Black voters....a legacy of decades of voter suppression. October 08, 2020 Sean Simmers |ssimmers@pennlive.comMikell Simpson was one of the best high school football players to ever come out of the city of Harrisburg, and on this week’s episode of the Pa.

His best season there came in 2009 where he collected 972 yards of offense— 570 yards rushing and 402 receiving— with 10 touchdowns. However, that same season is where Simpson suffered an injury that would change the rest of his life. Simpson went on to sign with the Cincinatti Bengals in 2010 following that season, however, it wasn’t until after signing with the team that he found out he had damage to his spine that would cut his professional playing career short. Devastated by the news, Simpson said he entered a deep stage of depression.
