Brian Horner, who teaches fourth and fifth grade at Meadow Glens Elementary School in Naperville, will learn in the spring if he's the winner of a Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Teaching.
Horner, who teaches gifted students in Naperville School District 203, said his goal is to make his classroom feel like a family where students are safe from ridicule or bullying. The community they build helps them trust one another, he said.“I can’t tell you how much I care about them,” said Horner, a Plainfield resident. “We always talk about being a class family. They are my family away from my own family. We discuss endlessly that who they are matters and where they are going matters.
“I’m more interested in things that endure — in empowering our kids in terms of personal ownership of their thinking and who they will eventually become. That’s why I try to make the teaching of thinking itself as a central focus in my class.” When his students feel safe and comfortable in the classroom community they’ve created, “they become fearless intellectual warriors,” he said.
