This all-Black college swim team just made history

Askew, an alumnus of Howard and a former swimmer at the university, believes that to bridge demographic disparities in the swimming realm, it takes initiative at a higher level.

Swim education among African American children is low, with about 64% of African-American children with little to no swimming ability, according to aAskew, a swim coach since 2014, told ABC News that increased exposure at an early age could promote healthy growth in swimming, especially among minorities and inner-city youth.

"It allows them to be around people who share experiences that they can't normally talk about or they can't really express themselves. They can't really be authentically themselves. So now they're able to come out of their shell, they're able to be themselves, and they're able to shine while doing it," Askew said.

When are you going to stop emphasizing everything is about race and start promoting equality you made a hero out of Britney a black basketball player she is just a basketball player. She’s not a hero.

So it’s OK to have an all black team yet you criticize when the blacks are excluded from white teams only

What no Koreans? Shameful this doesn’t have any representation beside a single race and doesn’t reflect the wide cultural diversity of the campus.

sorry, NBC Blue Network, but many of us (like me) feel 'An All-Black ... team' is every bit as racist as 'an all-White [a] ... team' would be. [a] uckfay you, Associated Press. If one of them gets capitalized, so should be the other.

What am I missing here? Is it historic because Howard has never won the conference championship before or because the team is all-black? Or both?

Historic. And not just for knowing how to swim at all.
