Students have claimed they are left with no option but to sofa surf or squat as the soaring price of rent rapidly outstrips loans in the country’s most popular cities to study outside of London.
Maintenance loans are calculated based on household income but for the typical student outside London it gives them an income of around £141 a week.by listings website StuRents, this would leave the students in the biggest cities with no more than £30 a week after paying rent on average.In Bristol, the average rent has gone up 9.6 per cent from £136 a week in 2022, to £149 in 2023.In Manchester, rent is up 8.5 per cent from £107 a week to £116.
“I’m having conversations with friends about it all the time,” she said. “You hear about a spare room and then by the time you ask ‘can I take that?’ it’s gone. It’s really competitive. Ms McAllister-Sutton works as a teaching assistant but says most of her friends have hospitality jobs in bars, restaurants and cafes.“And I think the social side of it is difficult because you’re constantly exhausted.”
