Black Law Student Census Report suggests law schools create separate admission program and Black-focused scholarships and bursaries

To boost the ranks of Black lawyers in Canada, law schools should introduce a separate admissions program for Black students and create Black-focused scholarships and bursaries, according to a new report.

A total of 12,895 students were enrolled in Canadian law school in 2022. Of those, 511, or 3.9 per cent, identify as Black. Black Canadians make up 4.3 per cent of the population, according to the 2021 census. Another reason to increase the ranks of Black people in the legal profession is because Black people have been, both as victims and those accused or convicted of crimes, Ms. Harris-Eze points out. A federal study from 2016 found Black people were more likely to receive longer sentences and less likely to receive fines or conditional sentences compared to the rest of the population.

At the University of Toronto’s law school, the Black Student Application Program was introduced in 2021 so that when evaluating candidates, the admissions team – which includes Black lawyers, faculty and senior students – could see “the fuller context of their academic and non-academic achievements, perspectives and lived experiences,” according to a written statement from Ada Maxwell-Alleyne, the assistant dean of equity, diversity and inclusion at the University of Toronto’s law faculty.

I love how loud, wrong and willfully misinformed most of the people in this thread are. Definitely fuels me forward to be a Lawyer.

No because the people who preform law on the establishment of bending or breaking, on the abstention of people, the rules of every established country. You supply the land owners and the potentially fatal employees children a place. And then you establish food and consider yours.

Can't work for the law when you're breaking it 😉

Confused as to the logic of visible minorities need professionals reflecting visible minorities because they will trust and understand them but whites should not look at colour because that is racist. Isn't there something wrong with this logic?

Huh💀

Maybe Black students don’t want to be lawyers. Maybe they’re too smart and see how shitty the profession is?

I thought the law was blind.

Why? They do not enrolled cause theu choose not too. Stop, forcing this ideas. Only if you study hard and focus is not about colour.

WHT IS THE MEAN OF BLACK LAW STUDENTS ? IF WE R CANADIANS ? THN WHT IS MEAN OF BLACK AND WHITE ? ITS RACISM SPREAD STATEMENTS ? DISCRIMINATION FULL SURVEY ? THAT SPREATE CANADIANS ? SHAME ON YOU ?

Definitely not. Every space reserved for black students at law school is a space lost to a hard working Canadian who is rejected solely because he is not black. It is not only wrong. It is very very wrong.

We don't want to go down this slippery slope. Asian Americans filed lawsuits against Harvard and UNC because they get rejected by these schools because these university practice affirmative action and treat blacks preferentially.

Not affirmative action in any field or at any university.

Absolutely not. We don't affirmative action in this country. If you are good, regardless of your color, race or any other attribute, you can be a lawyer. But we don't want to give certain studnets a priviledge only because of his skin color.

Hell no…wth is this.

I didn't realize transcripts and resumes were colour coded.

No one should get special treatment because of their race or gender if you deserve the job then you should get it if you don’t deserve the job you don’t get it

Blacks make up only a small 3.5% of the Canadian population. Why is there this constant pandering? Let success be based on merit not skin colour.

Shouldn’t people get accepted through hard work and grades?

Are there any Academic requirements and Grade Requirements to get into Law School? Just Curious

Why would law schools listen to racists?

Equality of Opportunity, not of outcome. What say you jordanbpeterson? Just another nail in the coffin of Canadian post secondary education?

Law schools should treat all applicants equally.

Simply by being black? No that's racism.

What about purple people?

Why not all under represented minorities

thats racist.its equal rights. 'special' admission program? 'black' scholarships? How about...no. thats racist to the extreme. And it will be a riot if any taxpayer dollars go towards it.

How

They choose gangs!!

How do you boost that? It's up to the students I believe.

Great idea as long as they meet the same academic criteria as everyone else has too...

Best candidate should be let in...no.quotas. disgusting communist attempts

Because…. A certain skin color makes you a better lawyer?

D.I.E. Needs to die, this is embarrassing for all involved.

The reason Lady Justice is blindfolded is to symbolize objectivity, impartiality and fair treatment to all. That ideal should be paramount in any proposed changes to admissions criteria

Negative comments do not understand the issues

they get in based on MERIT. Not the colour of their skin.

I guess black people should apply

Tell them to study harder and work harder then.

How about we support Black students and their families from the time they first go to school. If we did that we would see a higher percentage graduate high school and go to university and be lawyers. More scholarships too.

This nonsense needs to end

The reason Lady Justice is blindfolded is to symbolize objectivity, impartiality fair treatment to all.

Why can't you give priority to merits and not color? Are we trying to create criminals?

Of course! How we say “must” instead of should

If they get decent LSAT scores and have good GPAs that would make them admissible under the current standards, why not?

As long as they meet the educational standards ... I would not hire a 'quota' lawyer if I'm trying to win a case
