SAISD Superintendent Jaime Aquino talks with a parent as SAISD police chief Johnny Reyes, far left, speaks with trustee Ed Garza before a town hall meeting at Jefferson High School in September.Success in getting students from high school into universities here — particularly UTSA by way of the Alamo Colleges — got a spotlight Thursday at the National Conference on Education, which is being held in San Antonio this year.
Flores addressed a problem that community colleges face anywhere in the country - competition with four-year institutions of higher education. But Flores said the ACD doesn’t compete with any public or private university in the region. His school district strives to make the impossible a reality for students that look like him, he said, noting that he is still learning English. The district’s motto, “Always Learning,” is also the name of a five-year plan the district is preparing to take to the SAISD board.Aquino also celebrated SAISD’s college enrollment rate at the conference; 52 percent of its class of 2022 are currently in their first semester of college.
