For Luck Fusca, executive director of the P.E.I. Transgender Network, the concern is not so much that the resolution will pass, but that bringing it forward impacts queer people.
Lucky Fusca, executive director of the P.E.I. Transgender Network, says the resolution about gender diversity guidelines set to be voted on at a future Morell Consolidated Home and School meeting is harmful to youth in the school, but also to teachers and parents.
The 19-paragraph resolution cites numerous Supreme Court of Canada decisions and UN conventions but did not specifically note how they pertain to the resolution. Several of the quotes discuss parental authority outweighing that of the state in education; several more note religious freedoms in public schools. It also says the guidelines are outside the scope of teachers’ employment and expectations. On Feb. 6, the PSB released a statement about home and school resolutions and supporting children.
