Thanks to the efforts of students in Oshawa, a new mural is celebrating Black excellence in Canada and around the world.“We decided to use figures that are awesome and that people look up to because they represent excellence,” said Grade 12 student Scharla Green. “We wanted to use people that inspired others.”

Canadian historical figures like Viola Desmond, Lincoln Alexander and Rosemary Brown are present, along with international figures like Nelson Mandela and Harriet Tubman. Students came together with the school’s principal during the previous school year to share ideas on how to better represent each other in the school. Senior students from the Black Students’ Association helped with brainstorming and shaping ideas.
