UCP to cap post-secondary tuition hikes at two per cent ableg abpoli yyc

That came after the UCP set a cap on domestic tuition increases at seven per centUniversity of Calgary students gathered outside the Board of Governors meeting at the Administration building on campus to protest the tuition increases on Friday, January 20, 2023.That decision brought an end to a five-year freeze on tuition fee increases, introduced in 2015 by the then-NDP government.

“ are looking for more predictability when it comes to tuition increases and tuition policy,” he said. “A method whereby you have a calculation based on the previous year’s CPI doesn’t provide students with a lot of certainty or clarity.”Nicolaides said the province is also planning changes to relax burden from student loan repayment, as well as boosts to grants for low-income students.

The interest-free grace period for student loans will be increased from 6 months to 12 months. Interest rates on student loans will be reduced to the prime rate, down from the current prime-plus-one per cent rate introduced by the UCP in 2019. The threshold for the Repayment Assistance Plan will be increased from $25,000 to $40,000. That program reduces monthly student loan payments until students are earning above that threshold.

As well, the province is adding $2.25 million in student grant funding for the ongoing 2022–23 academic year, with the funds giving 10,000 low-income students an additional $225 per month, putting their total monthly grant to $475. That funding is retroactive to the start of the academic year and will be paid out in a lump sum, with students receiving the additional cash to be notified within the next two weeks.

… possibly, once the election is in the rear-view mirror. Or maybe not.

After they let them rip. Must be an election coming !!!!

Perfect time and just before an election it doesn't kick in till 2024 by then they'll change their minds on that, The UPC way

The UCP: run everything down for 3.5 years then add some bandaids at election time. They also don’t say anything about more funding for those schools. That means they need to cut in other areas to balance the books. (Who needs to fix leaky roofs anyway?) Can’tTrustSmith

Love it when an election is on the horizon!
